BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Diya TV) — A shooting during a Fourth of July family cookout near New York City’s Coney Island beach left eight people injured, including four children, police said Sunday. Investigators continue to search for the suspect, who fled the scene after opening fire into a crowded apartment courtyard.

The violence happened Saturday night just one block from the famous Coney Island boardwalk. The location also sits close to the site of the annual Nathan’s Famous hot dog eating contest, which drew large crowds earlier in the day for Independence Day celebrations. The shooting shocked residents and visitors as many families gathered to enjoy the holiday weekend.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said one victim, a 21-year-old woman, remained in critical condition. However, doctors expected the other seven victims to survive. Officials described their injuries as stable.

The children injured in the shooting are 6, 7, 12, and 14 years old, according to Tisch. Emergency crews quickly responded to the scene and transported all victims to nearby hospitals for treatment. Authorities have not released the identities of those injured.

Investigators said the shooting took place in the courtyard of a residential apartment building where family members and friends had gathered for a holiday cookout. According to police, a suspect wearing a black mask approached the area and fired multiple shots into the crowd.

After the gunfire, the suspect ran from the scene before officers arrived. Even so, investigators recovered a firearm during their search of the area. Police have not confirmed whether the recovered weapon belonged to the suspect or if forensic testing has linked it to the shooting.

Officials said they have not determined a motive for the attack. In addition, police have not announced any arrests. Detectives continue to review evidence and search for surveillance video that may help identify the gunman.

Tisch also said officers found no reports of earlier arguments, fights, or disturbances before the shooting. As a result, investigators continue to examine whether the victims were targeted or if the attack happened at random. Police have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The shooting unfolded during one of the busiest holiday weekends of the year in New York City. Earlier on Friday, thousands of people visited Coney Island to celebrate Independence Day. Many attended the beach, enjoyed amusement rides, and watched the long-running Nathan’s Famous hot dog eating contest before gathering with family and friends later in the evening.

Residents in the neighborhood expressed concern after the shooting interrupted what had been a festive holiday. Although the incident occurred near popular attractions, police have not said that tourists or visitors were among those injured.

Law enforcement officers remained at the scene for several hours as investigators collected evidence and interviewed witnesses. Meanwhile, detectives continue to ask anyone with information to come forward. They also hope surveillance footage from nearby buildings or businesses will help identify the suspect and establish a timeline of events.

The latest shooting adds to ongoing concerns about gun violence affecting communities during public holidays and family gatherings. While large celebrations often bring people together, isolated acts of violence can quickly disrupt those events and leave lasting impacts on victims and neighborhoods.
