SAN FRANCISCO (Diya TV) — Chilean-American blogger Gonzalo Lira, known as ‘CoachRedPill,’ has reportedly died in a Ukrainian prison, as confirmed by the US Department of State. The 55-year-old blogger, residing in Kharkov, shifted from blogging to YouTube commentary during Russia’s military operation in Ukraine in February 2022. Arrested by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in May, Lira faced accusations of “discrediting” the Ukrainian leadership and military.
Lira’s death was first disclosed by his family and has sparked controversy over the circumstances leading to this tragic incident. The blogger’s father, Gonzalo Lira Sr., alleged torture, extortion, and prolonged isolation during his son’s eight-month incarceration. Lira Sr. placed blame on Ukrainian President Zelensky and accused the US Embassy of inaction, claiming his son’s death responsibility lies with both Zelensky and President Joe Biden.
In a note published by The Grayzone, Lira Sr. expressed his dissatisfaction with the handling of his son’s case and accused the Ukrainian regime of contributing to the tragedy. The family reached out to X host Tucker Carlson, who had previously discussed the case with Lira Sr. in early December.
Lira resurfaced in late July on X, detailing his torture in jail and attempts by the SBU to extort money from him. His last public message expressed an attempt to flee to Hungary and seek asylum, fearing repercussions under the Kiev regime. Two days later, it was confirmed that Lira had been caught and imprisoned by Ukrainian authorities.
The latest revelations include a handwritten note from Lira’s sister, received on January 4, citing severe health problems caused by pneumonia and a collapsed lung. Ukrainian prison authorities acknowledged the issue only on December 22, stating that Lira would undergo surgery.
Entrepreneur Elon Musk personally inquired about Lira’s case with both Presidents Biden and Zelensky but seemingly without significant impact. Lira, a dual citizen of the US and Chile, highlighted the contrasting responses of the Chilean Embassy and the US mission during his ordeal.
The US Department of State, confirming Lira’s death in a Ukrainian prison, expressed condolences to the family and stated readiness to provide appropriate consular assistance. The circumstances surrounding Lira’s death and the international response raise questions about the treatment of individuals in custody and diplomatic efforts in such cases.
