CALGARY, Canada (Diya TV)— A group of men supportive of the Khalistan separatist movement violently assaulted Canada-based RED FM News Director Rishi Nagar allegedly for refusing to align with their agenda. Nagar, who is a well-known voice in Calgary’s Punjabi community, was physically attacked as tensions continue to rise within segments of the diaspora over the controversial Khalistan movement, which advocates for an independent Sikh state in India.

Local police are investigating the incident, which occurred outside Nagar’s radio station. Nagar says he sustained minor injuries, but remains committed to his work, stating he would not be intimidated by such acts. “I have always believed in unbiased journalism and will continue to do so,” Nagar said following the assault.

The attack comes amid increasing concerns about the influence of Khalistani sympathizers in Canada. These groups have become more vocal in recent months, especially in regions with large Punjabi populations like British Columbia and Alberta. Nagar, known for his neutral stance on the Khalistan issue, has often emphasized peaceful dialogue and unity in his broadcasts, which may have drawn the ire of extremist factions.

Canada’s growing Sikh community has historically supported the rights of Sikhs, but divisions remain over the issue of Khalistan. While the majority of Canadian Sikhs are not involved in separatist activities, a vocal minority continues to push the Khalistani narrative. The Canadian government has expressed concern over the activities of these groups, but has also maintained its commitment to free speech and peaceful activism.

Local leaders, including Calgary’s mayor and members of Parliament, condemned the attack, emphasizing the importance of tolerance and freedom of expression.

Indian officials have also expressed concern over the increasing activities of Khalistani groups abroad, urging Canada to take stronger action against extremist elements that could harm diplomatic relations.

Nagar has received widespread support from the Punjabi and broader Canadian communities, many of whom have voiced their opposition to the Khalistan movement’s violent tactics.

As the investigation continues, Canadian authorities are monitoring the situation to prevent further incidents and Nagar says he is considering legal action. Calgary Police say as of now, there are no suspects in custody.
