TORONTO (Diya TV) — Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is hosting global investors in Toronto this week as his government seeks to attract new capital amid an escalating trade dispute with the United States.

More than 300 CEOs and senior investment executives are attending the Canada Investment Summit on Sept. 14 and 15. Their firms collectively manage about $120 trillion in assets.

The Canadian government says it aims to catalyze C$1 trillion in investment over the next five years. The summit is connecting investors with more than 160 Canadian projects in sectors including energy, critical minerals, infrastructure, technology, defense and advanced manufacturing.

Canada has 15 free trade agreements covering 51 countries and providing preferential access to markets with about 1.5 billion consumers, according to the federal government.

The investment push comes after U.S.-Canada trade negotiations broke down Aug. 21. The United States imposed 50% tariffs on about $20 billion in Canadian goods, and Canada later imposed retaliatory tariffs.

The Trump administration has since announced additional trade measures, including steps to remove Canadian products from U.S. federal procurement schedules.

Carney is scheduled to meet privately with executives from investment firms including Macquarie Group and Singapore’s Temasek Holdings. BlackRock CEO Larry Fink and Blackstone President Jon Gray are among the executives participating in the summit.

Carney previously served as governor of the Bank of Canada and Bank of England before becoming prime minister in 2025.

After the summit, Carney is scheduled to travel to Strasbourg, France, where he will address the European Parliament as Canada seeks to expand trade and investment ties with Europe.
