NEW DELHI (Diya TV) — Canada’s Foreign Minister Anita Anand began her first official visit to India on Monday, marking a fresh chapter in India-Canada relations. The visit aims to rebuild trust, strengthen economic cooperation, and revive key diplomatic mechanisms between the two nations.

Anand received a warm welcome in New Delhi from Indian officials. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared the news on X  posting, “A warm welcome to FM @AnitaAnandMP of Canada on her first official visit to New Delhi. This visit will help build on the positive momentum in India-Canada relations by revitalizing our bilateral mechanisms, deepening economic cooperation, and further strengthening the enduring people-to-people ties that anchor our partnership.”

Her arrival symbolizes a reset in bilateral relations that had been strained in recent years. Tensions between India and Canada grew during the tenure of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, particularly over issues related to extremism and diplomatic exchanges. The recent change in Canada’s leadership, with Mark Carney replacing Trudeau as prime minister, has opened the door for renewed dialogue and collaboration.

During her stay in New Delhi, Anand is scheduled to meet with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. The two leaders are expected to discuss ways to deepen cooperation across trade, technology, security, and education. She will also meet Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal to explore new avenues for economic growth and investment between the two countries.

Both sides are looking to enhance trade and business ties, with particular focus on sectors such as clean energy, digital innovation, and sustainable development. The visit aligns with India’s growing role in the Indo-Pacific and Canada’s interest in diversifying its partnerships across the region.

The Canada-India partnership has always been anchored by strong people-to-people ties. With a large Indian diaspora in Canada, both nations share deep cultural, educational, and economic linkages. Anand’s visit seeks to build upon these connections and encourage greater collaboration between businesses and institutions on both sides.

Following her meetings in Delhi, Anand will travel to Mumbai, where she plans to engage with Canadian and Indian firms. The discussions will center on promoting investment, job creation, and shared opportunities in key industries. According to Canada’s foreign ministry, these engagements will help “support investment, job creation and economic opportunity in Canada and India.”

Anand’s visit comes just months after Prime Ministers Mark Carney and Narendra Modi met on the sidelines of the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis, Canada. That meeting was widely seen as a turning point in bilateral relations, signaling both governments’ desire to move beyond past disagreements and focus on future cooperation.

Diplomatic observers view Anand’s India visit as a key step toward restoring confidence and advancing shared goals under the broader Indo-Pacific framework. Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy emphasizes partnerships with regional powers like India to promote stability, prosperity, and open trade routes across the region.

Before departing for her three-nation Asian tour, which includes visits to China and Singapore, Anand outlined her vision for Canada’s engagement in the Indo-Pacific. “For Canada to be strong at home, we need strong, stable partnerships abroad,” she said. “I am building bridges and increasing cooperation with India, Singapore, and China. In line with Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, I will be working to advance efforts to position Canada as a trusted, reliable partner of choice for Indo-Pacific countries and their economies.”
