OTTAWA (Diya TV) – Canada revealed its Immigration Levels Plan for 2024-2026, with an ambitious goal of welcoming 485,000 new immigrants in 2024 and reaching 500,000 permanent residents by 2025. Despite housing challenges, the government remains committed to high immigration levels, emphasizing the positive impact on the economy and the need for a skilled workforce.

The new plan aims to invite a record 485,000 newcomers in 2024, with Indians expected to benefit significantly. Last year, over 118,000 Indians obtained Canadian permanent residency, constituting a quarter of all newcomers.

The increased immigration targets are projected to raise Canada’s population by 1.3% annually. The country recently surpassed the 40-million mark, and high immigration levels are seen as vital for economic growth.

In 2024, Canada plans to welcome a record 76,115 new refugees, reflecting the nation’s commitment to providing refuge and support to those in need.

While acknowledging housing and infrastructure challenges, the government emphasizes the need for responsible population growth. The Immigration Minister, Marc Miller, states that the plan strikes an appropriate balance to support economic growth.

India, being Canada’s largest source of immigration, is expected to be a major beneficiary of these immigration levels. Despite recent tensions, experts believe Canada has no alternative but to continue relying on Indian immigrants to meet workforce demands.

The stable immigration target of 500,000 from 2026 aims to allow for successful integration and address the aging population and labor shortages in key sectors.
