WASHINGTON, D.C. (Diya TV) – It’s another year of history at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington DC. Bruhat Soma, a 7th grader from St. Petersburg Florida, took home the crown after an intense spell off. After his big victory, Bruhat plans to give back using the 50,000 dollars he received.

After 2022’s Spelling Bee went to a spell off for the first time, this year delivered the same drama. Spell-offs occur when the competition goes over time and a winner still hasn’t been decided. Soma spelled a whopping 29 words correctly in his allotted 90 seconds. But even runner-up Faizan Zaki, a 6th grader from Dallas Texas, had 20 correctly spelled words within the timeframe. Both spellers gave it their all and after the win, Soma finally got to see the fruits that bore from his hard work.

Both of the finalists being of Indian-American descent go along with past historical trends. 29 of the last 35 winners fit that group. It’s been utter domination of late with Bruhat Soma as the latest in a long line of Indian-American winners (the last three spelling bee champions have been Indian-American).
