NEW YORK (Diya TV) — A wealthy hedge fund executive and his wife have come under renewed scrutiny over their support for policy groups linked to ideas championed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Bobby Jain, founder of hedge fund Jain Global, and his wife, Carola Jain, have donated millions of dollars through the Jain Family Institute. This nonprofit research organization has explored topics such as universal basic income, housing reform, and economic inequality. Their support has sparked debate because of the couple’s wealth and the progressive policies promoted by organizations connected to the institute.
Critics argue that the funding highlights a growing trend among some wealthy donors who support policies that seek to reshape economic systems. Supporters, however, say the institute focused on research and practical solutions rather than political ideology.
The discussion has gained attention as Mamdani advances a policy agenda that includes proposals related to housing affordability, public services, and taxes on high-income earners. Several individuals connected to organizations supported by the Jain Family Institute have also backed some of those ideas.
According to tax records, the Jain Family Institute received more than $30 million in funding from the Jain family. The organization studied large-scale cash assistance programs and examined ways to address poverty and economic insecurity. It also published research on policies such as free public transportation and rent freezes.
As a result, some economists have questioned the institute’s approach. Stanford University economist John Cochrane criticized several of the policies associated with the organization. He argued that similar ideas have produced poor results in other places.
Meanwhile, representatives for the Jain family rejected claims that the institute functioned as a socialist organization. A spokesperson said Bobby Jain supports free markets and described the institute as a nonpartisan group that sought market-based solutions to public policy challenges.
The debate also centers on “Phenomenal World,” a magazine that received funding from the Jain Family Institute. The publication has featured articles discussing alternatives to traditional housing markets and arguments for expanding public or nonprofit housing models.
Some contributors have advocated reducing the role of private landlords and increasing public ownership of housing. Supporters of those ideas say public housing can help stabilize rents. Critics, however, argue that reducing private investment could create new challenges for the housing market.
The institute’s connections have attracted attention because Robert “Jack” Gross, a major fundraiser for Mamdani, has served as editor-in-chief of the publication. Gross has also raised money for Mamdani’s political campaigns and has expressed support for several left-wing causes.
In addition, Gross is involved with the NYC Policy Forum blog, another project that has received backing connected to the institute. The blog has published articles discussing public pharmacies, public grocery stores, and tax policies aimed at higher-income residents.
However, representatives for the Jain Family Institute said the organization did not control the editorial direction of publications it supported. They also noted that the institute wound down operations earlier this year.
At the same time, Bobby Jain remains a prominent figure in finance. A Queens native, he spent more than two decades at Credit Suisse and later served as co-chief investment officer at Millennium Management. He launched Jain Global in 2024 after raising approximately $5.3 billion from investors. The firm later returned outside investor capital and now manages money exclusively for Millennium.
The controversy has also reached Cornell University, where Jain serves on the board of trustees and as vice chair of the investment committee. Student activists recently criticized investments linked to companies involved in the aerospace and construction industries. They argued that those investments conflicted with their political views regarding international conflicts.
Carola Jain has also built a public profile through philanthropy, arts organizations, and cultural initiatives. She serves on advisory boards connected to major art institutions and has participated in projects involving digital art and emerging technologies.
