SAN FRANCISCO (Diya TV) — World leaders have converged in San Francisco for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, with President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping meeting at the scenic Filoli estate. The summit, the largest international forum in San Francisco in nearly 80 years, draws attention to key developments.
Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in San Francisco, greeted by Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Governor Gavin Newsom, and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom. President Biden, welcomed by the same officials, will attend the APEC forum namely to engage in bilateral discussions with President Xi.
APEC, established in 1989, is a premier regional economic forum focusing on advancing economic policies in the Asia-Pacific. The APEC Economic Leaders’ Week runs from Nov. 11 to 17, featuring the APEC CEO Summit from Nov. 14 to 16 at the Moscone Center.
The event gathers leaders and representatives from 21 APEC member economies, addressing regional economic issues such as sustainability, digitalization, and women’s economic empowerment. APEC’s 2023 policy priorities include building a resilient and interconnected region, enabling an innovative environment, and affirming an equitable and inclusive future.
Notably, India is not a member of APEC, but their Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is on hand to engage with top business leaders and government officials like U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.
High-profile speakers at the APEC CEO summit include leaders from FedEx, Mastercard, Citi, Johnson & Johnson, ExxonMobil, Organon, Eurasia Group, Visa, PwC, Salesforce, Food Systems for the Future, Pfizer, Microsoft, and Uber.
Security measures are in place during APEC, with street closures around Moscone Center and Nob Hill. Transit and freeway closures will be implemented, impacting the Bay Bridge, Highway 101, and Interstate 80.
In parallel, downtown San Francisco and Chinatown offer community events, adding vibrancy to the city during the week-long summit that expects around 20,000 attendees.
