TORONTO (Diya TV) — With every swing of the bat, 19-year-old Arjun Nimmala is making history. The Toronto Blue Jays made headlines when they selected Nimmala as the 18th overall pick in the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft. The Florida-born shortstop became the first first-generation Indian American to be drafted in the first round by a Major League Baseball team.
Now, one of the top prospects in the Blue Jays system is showing signs of breaking out. He was named Northwest League Player of the Week in May for the Vancouver Canadians after he went 9-for-25 (.360) with a double, a triple, two homers, six runs scored, six RBI, 18 total bases, four walks and two steals in six games played. He’s also considered a top 50 prospect for the entire sport in multiple publications.
Nimmala’s journey to the big leagues started far from traditional baseball territory. Raised in a household that loved cricket, Arjun found his passion in America’s pastime. His father, who played cricket back in India, encouraged his son to explore baseball. It didn’t take long for Arjun to fall in love with the sport.
“What made me fall in love with baseball? Just having fun, hitting the white ball,” he said.
Though baseball is still developing in popularity among South Asian communities in the U.S., Nimmala pushed through. “Other than my brother, I never played with anyone who was Indian,” he recalled. Now, he’s inspiring a generation of Indian and South Asian youth to consider baseball as a path.
Nimmala now plays for the Vancouver Canadians, the Blue Jays’ High-A affiliate. Major League Baseball currently ranks him as the No. 48 overall prospect out of more than 900 players in the minor league system. His blend of athleticism, strong fielding, and power at the plate makes him a standout. Scouts praise his smooth swing and quick hands. But it’s not just his talent that sets him apart — it’s the significance of what he represents.
“Being the first is always going to be an accomplishment of its own,” Nimmala said. “But I just want to do what I can to grow the game.”
Nimmala’s success comes at a time when MLB is trying to expand its reach in India — a country where cricket dominates and baseball remains relatively unknown. With a population of over 1.4 billion, India offers a massive opportunity for the sport to grow, both in viewership and participation.
“We want to try to introduce the sport to as many kids as possible,” an MLB official said. “That’s the way to build lifelong fans.”
Bringing baseball to mainstream media in India is also a key part of that plan. Highlighting players like Nimmala helps bridge the gap between the two cultures and makes the sport more relatable. “If we can get baseball to the scale of cricket, it would be a huge breakthrough. It could look a lot like what we see in Japan or the United States,” said another league representative.
Since his draft, Nimmala has received countless messages from young Indian and South Asian fans. Many of them say he’s the reason they started playing baseball.
“I get a lot of messages, especially on Instagram, from younger kids who are Indian,” Nimmala said. “They’re like, ‘Dude, I look up to you.’ I think it’s super cool to see that.”
Nimmala’s influence extends beyond age or background. Fans across North America are cheering him on as he continues his journey. And many believe he’s destined for the majors.
“Do you think he’ll get to the major leagues? Oh, 100%,” said one fan.
Despite the pressure, Nimmala stays grounded and focused. His goal remains clear: to make it to the MLB and make an impact. “I have 100% confidence that I will play with the Toronto Blue Jays one day,” he said. With his talent, dedication, and growing fan base, Arjun Nimmala is well on his way to becoming a household name — and possibly, a trailblazer for baseball’s future in India.
