NORMAN, Okla. (Diya TV) — Oscar Concessao, a celebrated Indian architect and University of Oklahoma alumnus, will be inducted into the 2025 Hall of Fame at the university’s Gibbs College of Architecture. This honor recognizes his decades-long career in architectural excellence and his impact on global design.
Concessao completed his master’s degree in architecture with a focus on urban design from the University of Oklahoma in 1987. That same year, at just 23, he won the prestigious William Van Allen International Fellowship Design Competition. This early recognition marked the beginning of a prolific career.
He later pursued advanced professional studies at Harvard University and received honorary doctorates from the University of Malaysia and the University of Milan. His academic achievements and international exposure shaped his bold, modern approach to design.
Born in Valencia, Mangalore, Concessao studied at St. Aloysius School. He earned his undergraduate degree in architecture from the Regional Engineering College, now known as the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Tiruchirappalli.
In 2014, NIT Tiruchirappalli honored him with the Distinguished Alumni Award during its Golden Jubilee celebrations. The award was presented by the late Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the former President of India.
In March 2025, Concessao received the Eminent Aloysian Award from St. Aloysius Institutions, recognizing his outstanding contributions to architecture and society.
Concessao’s architectural firm, Oscar & Ponni Architects, is based in Chennai. He runs the practice alongside his wife and business partner, Dr. Ponni M. Concessao, also a noted architect. The firm has earned more than 68 awards for architecture and interior design.
Together, they have completed projects across India and the Middle East. Their portfolio includes information technology parks, biotechnology campuses, educational institutions, government buildings, and residential complexes. One of their recent highlights is the design of the Telangana State Secretariat in Hyderabad.
Concessao’s work also spans international borders. He previously worked in New York with top architectural firms. There, he contributed to the design of skyscrapers, stadiums, hospitals, and institutional buildings.
Over the years, Concessao has received 218 awards at the international, national, and state levels. These honors recognize his design excellence, innovation, and commitment to shaping modern urban environments.
His induction into the University of Oklahoma’s Hall of Fame places him among the most respected alumni of the Gibbs College of Architecture. It highlights his influence in the field and his role as a mentor and inspiration to young architects worldwide.
Concessao’s architectural philosophy blends global perspectives with local relevance. He focuses on sustainable design, functionality, and cultural integration. His projects often reflect the growing need for innovation in urban planning and public infrastructure.
As cities evolve and demand smarter solutions, architects like Concessao are at the forefront. His legacy continues to grow through his firm’s ongoing work and his influence on the next generation of architects.
Though his work has reached global platforms, Concessao remains closely connected to his roots. His awards from both NIT Tiruchirappalli and St. Aloysius Institutions show his lasting impact on the Indian academic and professional community.
The upcoming Hall of Fame induction at the University of Oklahoma is another testament to his enduring career and the respect he commands across continents.
