PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (Diya TV) — Indian-origin English golfer Aaron Rai has earned another major honor after a remarkable 2026 season. The DP World Tour announced on July 30 that Rai will receive the inaugural Rory McIlroy Award. The new annual honor recognizes the DP World Tour member who collects the most Race to Dubai points across golf’s four men’s major championships.
The award celebrates consistency at the sport’s biggest events. It also highlights strong performances at the Masters Tournament, the PGA Championship, the U.S. Open and The Open. Rai topped the standings with 1,876.5 Race to Dubai points and edged New Zealand’s Ryan Fox by just 42.5 points.
Rai enjoyed the best season of his career. Most importantly, he captured his first major title by winning the PGA Championship in May. He became the first English golfer in 107 years to lift the Wanamaker Trophy. His victory came after an impressive finish at Aronimink Golf Club, where he held his nerve during the closing holes.
In addition, Rai delivered steady results throughout the major season. He finished 48th at the Masters Tournament. Next, he claimed the PGA Championship title. After that, he tied for 11th at the U.S. Open before ending the campaign with a tie for 79th at The Open. Together, those performances helped him secure the highest Race to Dubai points total among all DP World Tour members.
Meanwhile, Ryan Fox also enjoyed a memorable year. He finished second in the Race to Dubai major standings with 1,834 points. Earlier this month, Fox won his first major championship by claiming The Open at Royal Birkdale. However, Rai’s overall consistency across all four majors proved enough to secure the new award.
The PGA Championship victory also pushed Rai to a career-best No. 15 in the Official World Golf Ranking. He remained inside the world’s top 20 after The Open, further underlining his impressive rise during the season.
The Rory McIlroy Award carries special significance because it bears the name of one of golf’s most accomplished players. The DP World Tour created the annual honor to recognize excellence in major championships while rewarding consistent performances across the season’s biggest events.
McIlroy praised Rai after the announcement and applauded both his talent and character.
“I’m delighted that Aaron’s achievements this season have been recognised as he becomes the first recipient of the Rory McIlroy Award,” McIlroy said.
He also praised Rai’s finish at the PGA Championship and called his performance over the closing holes at Aronimink truly impressive. Furthermore, McIlroy said Rai has long been respected on the DP World Tour for both his work ethic and his personality. He added that watching Rai’s success this season has been a pleasure.
Rai said the award means a great deal because it honors performances in golf’s biggest tournaments and carries McIlroy’s name.
“I’m truly honoured to be the first recipient of the Rory McIlroy Award during what has been an incredible season for my team and me,” Rai said.
He also described McIlroy as an inspiration both on and off the course. Moreover, Rai said he has always focused on improving his game through hard work and steady development. He added that competing on the DP World Tour remains a privilege and that he continues to value every opportunity.
Rai said receiving an award linked to McIlroy makes the recognition even more meaningful. He thanked his team and reflected on the hard work that helped him reach this point in his career.
DP World Tour Chief Executive Guy Kinnings also congratulated Rai. He described the PGA Championship victory as one of the defining moments of the 2026 season. In addition, Kinnings praised Rai for earning the first edition of the award through outstanding performances at the year’s biggest tournaments.
Rai will officially receive the Rory McIlroy Award from McIlroy during the BMW PGA Championship in September. The ceremony will mark another milestone in Rai’s breakthrough season.
The Rory McIlroy Award now joins the European Tour Group’s list of annual honors. Those awards include the Seve Ballesteros Award, the Harry Vardon Trophy, the Sir Henry Cotton Award and the John Jacobs Trophy.
