INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. (Diya TV) — A 7-year-old Reno girl was killed Saturday when she was struck by a boulder that rolled down Diamond Peak Ski Resort, authorities said. The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office released the girl’s name as Adelyn Grimes and ruled her death an accident.
She suffered blunt force trauma to the chest and neck, the office stated in a release Monday. Emergency personnel were dispatched to a report of a “non-skiing accident involving a child” at 3:38 p.m. on March 29, the ski resort said. First aid was provided by the Diamond Peak Ski Patrol until paramedics arrived, but Grimes was declared dead at the scene.
“The whole Diamond Peak Ski Resort community has been left reeling by tragedy,” the resort said in a statement. “We extend our most sincere condolences to the family, the Sugar Bowl ski racing team, and the entire Lake Tahoe ski racing community.” The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the accident, but information regarding how the boulder had rolled down has not been provided.
Grimes was a member of the Sugar Bowl racing team, which was competing in an under-12 skiing championship at Diamond Peak, according to the Reno Gazette Journal. Grimes was a happy child, friends and family members said, and would make those around her smile. A GoFundMe campaign set up for her family said she was a “shining star.”
The campaign will assist with funeral costs and give her parents time to mourn along with her younger brother. “Suddenly losing a child is an unthinkable loss,” her aunt, Sabina Grimes, wrote on the crowdfunding page. Diamond Peak Ski Resort, which is along the shores of Lake Tahoe, is still open as officials investigate.
