LOS ANGELES (Diya TV) — A 70-year-old Sikh man is fighting for his life after a brutal attack in North Hollywood. Harpal Singh remains in critical condition after a man struck him with a golf club on Aug. 4, authorities said.
Police say Singh, who lived at a local Sikh house of worship, has undergone at least three surgeries. He is still unconscious and unable to speak with investigators. The attack has left the local Sikh community shaken and searching for answers.
According to KCAL, Singh was walking near the temple around 3 p.m. when the attacker approached. Witnesses told police the suspect was riding a bicycle and swung the golf club with force. Singh was struck violently before the assailant fled the scene.
Authorities have not released a detailed description of the suspect. Investigators have not confirmed whether they have obtained any security footage from nearby locations.
Police are urging anyone with information to contact the Los Angeles Police Department’s North Hollywood Division.
The attack has caused fear and concern among Sikh residents and the broader community. Munmeeth Kaur, an attorney and community advocate, told KCAL the assault was deeply disturbing.
“It has a chilling effect. It’s terrifying when something like this occurs,” Kaur said. “We’re all on edge, especially when it occurs amongst the most vulnerable within our population. This was a 70-year-old man.”
The victim’s family said the attack has left them heartbroken. They have not been able to speak with Singh due to his critical condition. They also said they have not been told whether investigators have leads in the case.
The Sikh Coalition condemned the attack in a statement. The group called it an apparent hate-motivated crime and said it is working closely with Singh’s family.
“We are in contact with the family of the survivor and working with them to provide support as needed,” the organization said. “We are deeply disturbed by this violent act against an elderly member of the Sikh community.”
The coalition has urged law enforcement to conduct a thorough investigation, including examining whether the attack was motivated by bias or hate.
This incident comes amid rising concerns over violence against Indian Americans regardless of their faith. In recent years, community members have faced harassment, assaults, and in some cases, deadly attacks.
Advocates say elderly Sikhs are especially vulnerable, as they are often targeted for their appearance, including their traditional turbans and beards.
The LAPD has asked the public for any tips, video footage, or witness accounts that could help identify the suspect. Investigators believe someone in the area may have seen the suspect before or after the attack.
“Any information, no matter how small, can help bring justice for Mr. Singh,” a police spokesperson said.
Those with information can call the LAPD North Hollywood Division or provide anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.
