SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Diya TV) — The San Francisco 49ers will face a historic travel challenge in the 2026 NFL season. The 49ers are set to log more than 38,000 miles, the highest single-season travel total in NFL history. Two international games — one in Australia and one in Mexico — will push the team into uncharted territory. The demanding schedule adds another hurdle for a franchise that already competes in one of the league’s toughest divisions. The NFL continues to expand its global footprint. For the 49ers, that growth comes with a high cost.

The 49ers will open the 2026 season with a trip to Melbourne, Australia, where they will face the Los Angeles Rams. The matchup marks the NFL’s first regular-season game in Australia. The long flight and major time-zone change will test both teams. Later in the season, San Francisco will travel to Mexico City for another international game. The team will serve as the designated home team at Estadio Azteca, though the opponent has not yet been announced.

According to DraftKings, the 49ers will surpass 38,100 travel miles during the 2026 season. That total breaks the previous NFL record of 37,086 miles set by the Los Angeles Chargers in 2025. West Coast teams often rank near the top in travel distance. Cities are spread far apart west of the Mississippi River. But no team has faced a schedule like this.

The 49ers will become the first team in NFL history to play two international games on different continents in the same season. The Jacksonville Jaguars have played multiple games in London. The Minnesota Vikings played back-to-back international games in England and Ireland in 2025. But those contests stayed within Europe. San Francisco’s schedule is different. The team will travel to Australia in Week 1. It will return to Mexico City in December. The two trips will bookend the season.

The NFL plans to stage nine international games in 2026. League officials have stated a long-term goal of hosting 16 international games each year. That expansion increases travel demands, especially for West Coast teams. International travel can affect recovery and preparation. Teams often receive a bye week after overseas games to help players adjust. The 49ers must prepare for two separate long-haul trips.

The 49ers also face cross-country road games during the regular season. They will travel to the East Coast to play the New York Giants and the Atlanta Falcons. Those games add thousands more miles. The combined travel will test player stamina and depth. The NFL’s 17-game schedule already strains rosters. Long flights and time changes only increase the physical toll.

Last season, the 49ers battled injuries but still finished 12-5 under coach Kyle Shanahan. Key players missed time, yet the team reached the playoffs. Injuries limited their postseason run.

Now, the team must manage a heavier travel schedule while competing against strong NFC West rivals. The Seattle Seahawks enter the season as Super Bowl champions. The Rams reached the NFC championship game. Every divisional matchup carries playoff implications. Despite the challenges, team leadership supports the international spotlight.

“We are thrilled to return to Mexico and to play in front of one of the most passionate fan bases in the league,” 49ers CEO Al Guido said in a statement. He referenced previous trips in 2005 and 2022 and praised the team’s connection with Mexican fans.
