BERLIN (Diya TV) —
Spain has won the UEFA European Championship for a record fourth time. The Spanish defeated England 2-1 on Sunday in what ended up being a thriller. The first half lacked scoring with both teams failing to register a goal.
However, the action truly got going in the second half. Minutes into the frame, forward Nico Williams put Spain on the board. The 1-0 score remained for quite a while until England made an adjustment that saved them. Midfielder Cole Palmer subbed into the game and leveled the match at one immediately after he entered.
In the waning minutes of regular time, Spain found themselves on the attack with good stride. Defender Marc Cucurella kicked forward an excellent through ball and forward Mikel Oyarzabal on the receiving end delivered the game-winning goal. A last-gasp effort to draw even fell short as Dani Olmo played the role of goalkeeper for a few seconds and headed away a ball that was headed for the net.
The run for Spain was dominant as the club never lost a game in the tournament and led in goals scored. The competition it faced was also quite tough with many top contenders falling when faced against it. Spain defeated England, Italy (champions in the last Euro tournament), Germany (the hosts), and France (widely considered one of the best rosters on paper).
Spain’s players were also recognized as defensive midfielder Rodri took home an award for best player of the tournament while 17-year-old Lamine Yamal won for best young player.
Meanwhile, it’s another tournament of heartbreak for England who lost to Italy on penalties in the 2020 Euro Final. The club hasn’t won a major trophy in nearly 60 years and that trend was close to being bucked on Sunday. King Charles III took to social media after the match to give encouraging words to a dejected England squad.
“Although victory may have eluded you this evening, nevertheless my wife and I join all my family in urging you and your support team to hold your heads high. All those who have participated in sporting activities at any level will know how utterly despairing such a result can feel when the prize was so near – and will join me in sending heartfelt sympathy, even as we congratulate Spain. But please know that your success in reaching the European Championship final is a really great achievement in itself, and one that brings with it the pride of a nation which will continue to roar for the Three Lions today – and in the many triumphs which I have no doubt lie ahead.”
England will regroup for another run in the 2026 World Cup while Spain celebrates before a match with Copa America winners Argentina.
