SRINAGAR, India (Diya TV) — The United States may review its travel advisory for Jammu and Kashmir after recent steps to improve security, Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said Wednesday.
Gor said Washington regularly reviews travel warnings. He did not announce an immediate change to the advisory. However, he said the U.S. government would examine whether it should lower the current warning for the region.
The United States currently has a Level 4 travel advisory for Jammu and Kashmir. It urges Americans to “Do not travel” to the area. The warning represents the highest level in the U.S. travel advisory system.
Gor said the Indian government and the Jammu and Kashmir administration have taken steps to improve safety. He also pointed to the region’s tourism potential.
During a joint media briefing with Abdullah, Gor said Washington would assess whether the existing warning still reflects conditions on the ground. He added that many Americans could enjoy visiting the region because of its natural beauty and economic opportunities.
Still, Gor stopped short of announcing any formal policy change. The U.S. State Department will ultimately decide whether to alter the travel advisory.
Gor arrived in Srinagar for a two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. He met Abdullah at the chief minister’s residence soon after reaching the city.
Gor described the meeting as warm and productive. He said the two sides discussed issues that they hope to take forward with officials in New Delhi and Washington. Abdullah said the discussions covered U.S.-India relations, with a specific focus on Jammu and Kashmir.
According to Abdullah, the two sides also discussed long-standing issues involving the region. He said the governments would continue working on those matters.
The review does not guarantee a lower advisory level. Instead, U.S. officials will examine security conditions before making any decision.
