WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — American officials have issued stark warnings about Russia, Iran and China’s expected moves to weaponize artificial intelligence in attempts to interfere with this November’s U.S. presidential election. A newly released intelligence report said those countries are ramping up efforts to attempt to influence American voters through the use of disinformation tactics amplified by AI-driven tools.
The DHS and ODNI also have concerns that AI-generated disinformation is leveraged to shape opinions, deepen political polarization, and erode confidence in democratic institutions. Russian actors lead these efforts through conducting them by employing AI to generate fake websites, doctored videos, and manipulated media all purporting to be like legitimate U.S. news sources.
DHS said Russian operatives have focused on churning out AI-manipulated clips that distort speeches and rile up criticisms of Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris. Iran intensified its influence operations by posing under assumed names as activists on social media platforms to shape public discourse, particularly when sensitive issues were around – like the one over Israel and Gaza. Like Iran, China focused its efforts to fuel disinformation related to divisive topics at home, including immigration, abortion, and drug policy.
U.S. intelligence officials insisted that although AI continues to heighten the scale and speed of foreign influence operations, it fundamentally alters neither the behavior nor the nature of the activities. However, they cautioned that adversaries are becoming more sophisticated in using AI-generated content with more conventional methods of influencing people’s perception, with Russia being the most aggressive user, followed by Iran and China, which continue to enhance their AI capabilities to make propaganda more effective.
With the presidential election scheduled for November 5, 2024, stakes are very high and US agencies are on high alert for foreign attempts to disrupt the electoral process. Officials urged vigilance and called upon social media platforms and developers of AI to play a critical role in identifying and countering disinformation.
In response, it is argued that experts will continue to focus on the call for both digital literacy and general public awareness for the rejection of the misuse of falsehoods as foreign actors continue to exploit AI technology.
