U.S., Denmark and Greenland sign Arctic security deal

NEW YORK (Diya TV) — President Donald Trump and the leaders of Denmark and Greenland signed an agreement Tuesday that allows the United States to expand its military presence in Greenland while preserving Danish sovereignty over the Arctic territory.

Trump signed the agreement with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen during the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The agreement amends a 1951 defense treaty that established the legal basis for the U.S. military presence in Greenland. It allows Washington to develop its proposed Golden Dome missile-defense system on the island and expand its military infrastructure.

The United States already operates Pituffik Space Base in northwestern Greenland. The new agreement is expected to add military sites at Narsarsuaq, a former U.S. air base, and Mestersvig, which Denmark currently uses for its Sirius Dog Sled Patrol.

The pact does not transfer control of Greenland to the United States. Greenland remains a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, and Frederiksen said the agreement respects its territorial integrity and the Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination.

Trump said the agreement would prevent U.S. adversaries from establishing military operations or making sensitive investments in Greenland without American approval. The administration has cited growing Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic as a national security concern.

Nielsen said the agreement would strengthen Greenland’s security and emphasized NATO’s role in the Arctic. Frederiksen also described Arctic defense as a responsibility shared by NATO members.

The deal follows months of tension after Trump repeatedly sought U.S. control of Greenland and declined to rule out military or economic pressure. Danish and Greenlandic leaders rejected any transfer of the territory.

The agreement gives Washington greater military access without changing Greenland’s political status, marking a shift from Trump’s earlier effort to acquire the island.
