WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — President Donald Trump has suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz after himself, proposing the name “Trump Strait” as the key waterway remains at the center of the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran.
Trump floated the idea Wednesday in a Truth Social post, asking whether the strait should bear his name now that he says the United States controls it.
The proposal follows other efforts by Trump to rename geographic landmarks. He recently signed an executive order directing the federal government to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America” and has pushed to call the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America. Canada, Mexico and other countries have rejected those changes.
Unlike locations within or near U.S. territory, the Strait of Hormuz is an international waterway bordered by Iran and Oman. Any U.S. decision to rename it would not automatically change how other countries or international organizations refer to the strait.
The waterway connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and is one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes. Before the conflict began Feb. 28, about 20 million barrels of crude oil and petroleum products moved through the strait each day.
Shipping has fallen sharply during the conflict, although some energy traffic continues. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said Wednesday that more than 17 million barrels of oil passed through the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, calling it a wartime record.
The Trump administration has also pointed to oil transported through pipelines in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates that bypass the strait as evidence that regional energy exports are recovering.
Still, ship traffic remains below prewar levels as military strikes and security concerns continue to disrupt commercial activity.
Trump has not announced any formal process for renaming the Strait of Hormuz, leaving “Trump Strait” as a proposal rather than official U.S. policy.
