WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — President Donald Trump was optimistic the United States and India will settle their ongoing tariff rows, citing his good relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Addressing the White House, Trump declared, “PM Modi and I have always been very good friends. PM Modi is a very smart man and a great friend of mine. We will find a solution [to the tariff issues] soon.” He added more praise to Modi, “You have a great PM.”
The U.S.-India trade relationship has encountered difficulties, specifically regarding tariffs. Trump earlier targeted India’s excessive import levies, which it calls the biggest impostor of foreign product tariffs. In October 2024, in a Detroit speech, he stated, “India is a very big charger. We have a great relationship with India. I did. And especially the leader, Modi. He’s a great leader. Great man. He is a great man. He’s brought it together. He’s done a great job.” Amidst this criticism, Trump has repeatedly emphasized his connection to Modi.
The two leaders have held several meetings to discuss trade imbalances and tariff issues. In February 2025, during Modi’s visit to Washington, Trump recognized India’s intention to lower some tariffs and was hopeful about future trade deals. He mentioned that both countries were striving for a “major trade deal” to promote economic cooperation.
As the April 2 deadline to put new U.S. tariffs into effect nears—a date Trump has labeled “Liberation Day”—the world economy is watching with an eye on the possible implications. The planned tariffs are meant to lower the U.S. dependence on imports and correct trade deficits. While specifics are imminent, economic analysts have warned about potential consumer price hikes and far-reaching economic consequences.
Despite these challenges, Trump’s recent affirmations suggest a mutual commitment to resolving trade disputes amicably.
