WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — Congressman Suhas Subramanyam, D-Va., has accused the Trump administration of weakening the U.S.-India relationship through its foreign policy and trade decisions. He said tariffs and other actions have slowed progress between the two countries. He also argued that the administration has failed to strengthen key global partnerships while raising concerns about its approach toward Pakistan.
Subramanyam made the remarks while discussing the importance of keeping strong ties between Washington and New Delhi. He said the United States should work closely with India because both countries face common global challenges. He also stressed that steady diplomacy and reliable partnerships remain essential for long-term stability.
According to Subramanyam, the administration’s foreign policy has lacked consistency. He said decisions have changed too often and created uncertainty among allies. As a result, he argued that America has weakened relationships with many partners around the world.
“This foreign policy of this administration has been a complete failure, and they have hurt the US-India relationship,” Subramanyam said. He added that the administration had damaged ties with several allies while strengthening relationships with authoritarian governments.
He also questioned the administration’s decision-making process. “You know, it depends on which side of the bed the president wakes up on,” Subramanyam said. He argued that foreign policy should remain stable because allies depend on predictable leadership.
At the same time, Subramanyam emphasized the importance of the U.S.-India strategic partnership. He said both countries share many interests, including regional security, economic growth, and global stability. Therefore, he believes Washington should continue building stronger cooperation with New Delhi.
“I think in the end, we have to have a strong US-India relationship,” he said. He added that the United States must work with trusted allies to address major international issues and respond to countries that challenge global security.
Furthermore, Subramanyam said strong partnerships help protect shared democratic values. He noted that close cooperation allows nations to tackle economic, security, and diplomatic challenges more effectively. He argued that maintaining these relationships should remain a top priority for U.S. policymakers.
In addition, the Virginia Democrat expressed concern about the administration’s engagement with Pakistan and Pakistani Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir. He said the United States should continue working with partners in the region. However, he also stressed that Washington must hold its allies accountable when democratic values come under pressure.
“And, you know, in the end, we have to hold our allies to task, and that includes Pakistan and includes some of the things that have happened with their democracy,” Subramanyam said.
His comments came as debate continues over U.S. foreign policy in South Asia. India remains one of Washington’s most important strategic partners in the Indo-Pacific region. The two countries have expanded cooperation in defense, technology, trade, and security over the past several years. Many policymakers from both major political parties have supported closer engagement with New Delhi.
However, Subramanyam argued that recent trade measures have created new challenges. He said tariffs and other actions have made it harder to maintain positive momentum in bilateral relations. He believes stronger economic cooperation would benefit both countries and support broader strategic goals.
“But I think some of the things the President has done, with the tariffs and with some of his actions, have not been productive as far as continuing the US-India relationship,” Subramanyam said.
