SEATTLE, Wash. (Diya TV) — Support is growing for a proposed Cricket Community Park in King County as local leaders, cricket organizations, and fans push for a dedicated venue to serve one of the region’s fastest-growing sports.

The effort, led by the Seattle Orcas, has gained backing from more than 1,620 supporters and 14 local organizations. Advocates say the project would create a permanent home for cricket while helping meet the rising demand for public cricket facilities across the Seattle area.

Cricket participation has expanded rapidly throughout King County in recent years. Organizers estimate that more than 400 cricket clubs and 5,000 active players now compete in the region. They also report that youth participation has increased tenfold since 2017. Supporters say the growth has outpaced available infrastructure. Many players currently rely on shared athletic fields that were not designed specifically for cricket. As a result, leagues and community groups often face challenges when scheduling games, practices, and tournaments.

“Our multi-cultural, world-class fan base is ready for a world-class Cricket Community Park,” said Azeem Khan, president of the Northwest Cricket League. “This global sport has achieved liftoff in Seattle, and we need a local park that matches the passionate local need.”

Advocates believe a dedicated cricket venue would help address these concerns while creating a long-term recreational resource for residents across King County.

Plans for the Cricket Community Park include a venue with seating for approximately 4,000 spectators. Organizers envision a facility that can host community leagues, youth academies, recreational matches, and professional cricket competitions. The proposed park would also provide a potential long-term home for the Seattle Orcas, a Major League Cricket franchise that has helped increase interest in the sport throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Supporters say the facility would welcome players of all skill levels. They believe it could become a hub for youth development programs, amateur leagues, and regional tournaments. Bellevue community leader Jane Aras said the project would benefit families and athletes while serving a wide range of community needs.

“A Cricket Community Park allows everyone in the region to utilize a beautiful world-class resource for their specific needs — youth development, women’s and men’s tournaments, family recreation, or professional play,” Aras said.
