SAN FRANCISCO (Diya TV) — Indian diplomat Satish Kumar Sivan has taken charge as India’s consul general in San Francisco, leading a mission that oversees consular services and promotes economic, cultural and educational ties.
Sivan assumed the position Aug. 24 after serving as India’s consul general in Dubai and the Northern Emirates from October 2023 to July 2026. He brings more than two decades of diplomatic experience to the role.
His previous overseas assignments included serving as second secretary at the Indian Embassy in Beijing, first secretary at the Indian Embassy in Washington and deputy chief of mission at the Indian Embassy in Seoul.
At India’s Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi, Sivan served as joint secretary for the Rapid Response Cell and Development Partnership Administration. He oversaw Indian grant-funded development projects in partner countries. He also held positions in the ministry’s East Asia Division, where he handled relations with China, the Koreas and Mongolia.
As consul general, Sivan will oversee services for Indian citizens and work to strengthen trade, investment and cultural ties. The consulate’s responsibilities include consular affairs, economic cooperation, commercial outreach and media relations.
The San Francisco Bay Area holds a significant role in India-U.S. relations because of its technology companies, startups, investors, universities and Indian American community. The consulate regularly works with organizations across those sectors.
Sivan holds a master’s degree in commerce from the University of Madras. He speaks English, Hindi, Malayalam and Tamil and is conversant in Mandarin.
