NEW DELHI (Diya TV) — OpenAI CEO Sam Altman met with India’s IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to discuss the nation’s strategy for developing a low-cost artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem. Altman praised India’s swift adoption of AI technologies and its expanding ambitions in the sector.
During their meeting, Vaishnaw outlined India’s plan to establish an entire AI stack encompassing GPUs, models, and applications. He shared on X that OpenAI expressed willingness to collaborate across all three areas. Altman highlighted India’s significance to OpenAI, noting that the country has become its second-largest market, with user numbers tripling over the past year.
“I think India should be doing everything. I think India should be one of the leaders of the AI revolution,” said Altman, marking a shift from his previous skepticism about India’s capacity to develop substantial AI models with limited budgets.
This visit marks Altman’s first to India since 2023, a period during which OpenAI has faced legal challenges in the country. Notably, several Indian media houses have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging unauthorized use of their content for training AI models.
In a related development, Vaishnaw recently commended Chinese startup DeepSeek for its low-cost AI assistant, drawing parallels to India’s efforts to build a localized AI model. He remarked, “Our country sent a mission to the moon at a fraction of the cost that many other countries did right, why can’t we do a model that will be a fraction of the cost that many others do?”
Altman’s visit to India follows his recent trips to Japan and South Korea, where he secured deals with SoftBank Group and Kakao. In Seoul, he also discussed the Stargate AI data center project with SoftBank and Samsung.
