BIRMINGHAM, England (Diya TV) — University of Birmingham Associate Professor Dr. Ruchi Gupta has won the prestigious 2025 Women in Tech Academic Award, the university announced Sept. 8. The award recognises women making significant contributions to technology and innovation in the UK.
Gupta earned the accolade for her groundbreaking research in healthcare technologies. She is a pioneer in developing novel optical biosensors that are changing the way diseases, especially cancer, are detected. Her research is helping doctors identify health problems earlier, improving patient outcomes, and advancing medical technology.
Dr. Gupta has led numerous projects focused on hydrogel sensing technology, which has received worldwide recognition. She has published 49 research papers and secured more than $3.4 million in funding for her work. Her contributions to the field include a patented biosensor technology that could revolutionize disease detection and treatment.
“The potential of these technologies to transform healthcare is enormous,” Gupta said. “Early detection of diseases like cancer can save lives. Our research aims to make these tools more accessible and effective for patients everywhere.”
Gupta’s work blends science and innovation, providing practical solutions in healthcare. Her optical biosensors are designed to be fast, reliable, and efficient. By focusing on real-world applications, her research bridges the gap between laboratory discoveries and patient care.
Gupta earned her degrees from McMaster University and the University of Manchester. She has taught at the University of Hull and the University of Manchester before joining the University of Birmingham in 2017. Since then, she has become a leading figure in healthcare technology research, mentoring students and inspiring young scientists.
Her contributions go beyond research. She actively promotes women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), guiding diverse talent and encouraging young women to pursue careers in technology and science.
The Women in Tech Awards highlight women making an impact in technology. The awards celebrate their achievements and aim to inspire the next generation. By showcasing leaders like Gupta, the awards help young women see opportunities in technology and aspire to reach similar heights.
“It is humbling to win this prestigious award among so many fantastically talented women,” Gupta said. “I am delighted to receive the National Women in Tech 2025 Academic Award. Recognition like this motivates me to continue my research and support women in STEM.”
Gupta’s research and mentorship demonstrate the growing role of women in shaping technology and healthcare innovation. Her work on biosensors is at the forefront of medical technology, creating tools that can detect diseases earlier and more accurately.
By encouraging young scientists and promoting inclusive opportunities in STEM, Gupta is helping build a stronger, more diverse technology community. Her achievements are not just personal milestones; they represent progress for women in science and technology worldwide.
As healthcare technologies evolve, researchers like Gupta play a crucial role in driving innovation. Her commitment to advancing disease detection, mentoring future leaders, and promoting gender diversity sets a strong example for the next generation.
The University of Birmingham applauds her accomplishments and the broader impact of her work. Through awards like the Women in Tech Academic Award, society can recognize contributions that change lives, inspire future scientists, and drive progress in critical fields.
