BELGIUM (Diya TV) — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi warned the United Nations of risking its relevance in the absence of a tough and structured response to terrorism, during a speech Wednesday night. He relayed a sentiment of disappointment that the world has not yet formulated an effective response to terrorism, and worries about the threat the continued acts pose to humanity.
“The world has failed to understand the threat of this hideous monster,” he said to the mostly Indian crowd at the UN’s Brussels Expo.
He described a scenario in which India itself has been battling terrorism for almost a half century, and that the rest of the world hadn’t taken notice of the rising problems until 9/11. “When we raised our concern, we were told it is a mere law and order problem — until 9/11 happened,” he said. “And when the earth shook beneath their feet, they began to understand what terrorism is.”
His words were delivered just days after capital city was struck with terrorist attacks that killed more than 30 people. The United Nations has not yet equipped itself to understand this “new challenge of the new era,” he said. India has been requesting for years that the UN seek a resolution which defines who a terrorist is and which country’s are terrorist nations.
“I don’t know when this will happen but the way situations are changing, it won’t be too late when this organization will become irrelevant.
“The United Nations knows everything about a war and how to stop it. But if you ask about terrorism, even the UN doesn’t know. The world body of such a grand stature has failed to perform its responsibility,” said Modi.
