TAMPA, FL (Diya TV) – The San Francisco 49ers had their moments and kept it close against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but ultimately fell 30-19.

What Happened

Tampa Bay struck first after Kindle Vildor intercepted a Mac Jones pass early in the game. The Bucs capitalized two plays later with a short two-yard touchdown run by Rachaad White.

The 49ers responded before halftime. Christian McCaffrey punched in a one-yard rushing touchdown, the first of the season for San Francisco.

Just before the break, Baker Mayfield connected with Kameron Johnson on a 34-yard score, putting Tampa ahead 20-16 at halftime.

Early in the 4th quarter, facing 3rd & 14 at their own 41, Mayfield escaped multiple defenders and scrambled for a key first down. Two plays later, he found rookie Tez Johnson on a 45-yard touchdown pass, the first of the receiver’s career, giving Tampa a 27-19 lead. It was a phenomenal sequence for an early league MVP candidate in Mayfield.

The 49ers were driving for a potential tying score but Mac Jones was intercepted by Jamel Dean on a 4th & 5 from the Bucs’ 33 with under six minutes to go. This pick sealed the game for Tampa with Chase McLaughlin nailing a 45-yard field goal to make it a two possession game. Mac Jones made some nice throws throughout the game but that final decision was ultimately the decider.

Standout Performances

Mac Jones threw for 347 yards, one touchdown and two picks. Christian McCaffrey totaled 111 yards from scrimmage and scored the 49ers’ only touchdown of the game. Kendrick Bourne posted a career-high 142 receiving yards on five catches.

For the Buccaneers, Baker Mayfield continued to bolster his MVP case, going 17/23 with 256 yards and two touchdowns, alongside no picks. He also showed perfect efficiency with a 139.0 passer rating.

Injury Blow

The biggest story beyond the box score: 49ers linebacker Fred Warner suffered a gruesome, season-ending ankle injury in the first quarter after a collision with a teammate. He fractured and dislocated his ankle and will require surgery.

“It’s big. Anytime you lose one of your best players, also a huge leader. So obviously it’s a huge blow. Feel bad for Fred right now. He’s in good spirits. He’s got a good foundation. We have a lot of faith in Tatum Bethune. He’s the next man up and he’s gonna have to do it throughout the year.” – 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan

This is a massive loss for San Francisco’s defense, already impacted by the season-ending injury to Nick Bosa. The defense started to fall apart once Warner was removed from the game and the unit could not recover.

Looking Ahead

San Francisco falls to 4-2, tied atop the NFC West, but will face uphill battles with a weakened defense moving forward. Without Warner, the 49ers have to rework defensive alignments and lean on their depth and younger players to fill the void.

Next up is the Atlanta Falcons, a team that’s strugggled to find consistency. The 49ers will need to lean hard on their offensive stars to get back on track.
