WASHINGTON D.C. (Diya TV) Aruna Miller made history as the first immigrant and first Indian American elected statewide in Maryland when she was sworn in as the 10th lieutenant governor of the state. In Miller’s inauguration speech, she recognized her family who immigrated to the United States from India when she was seven. Miller delivered her speech next to Governor Wes Moore, the state’s first black governor. This is the first time the top two positions in a state are being held by racial minorities.

In North Carolina, Kumar Neppalli was arrested for allegedly running a ponzi scheme, targeting other Indian Americans. The 56 year old is facing a 23 count indictment in connection with wire fraud. Authorities say there are at least 12 victims who were taken advantage of in bad real estate investments. He’s expected to go to trial later this year and could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

There’s a significant number of Indian companies at the World Economic Forum being held in Davos, solidifying it’s presence as a strong resilient economy and acting as a diplomatic powerhouse on the global stage.
