NEW DELHI (Diya TV) — U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will visit India from May 23 to 26 for talks focused on energy security, trade, and defense cooperation, the U.S. Department of State confirmed. The visit highlights growing ties between India and the United States as both nations deepen cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
Rubio’s trip will include stops in Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi. Officials expect the visit to feature high-level bilateral meetings and a ministerial-level Quad gathering in the Indian capital. The Quad includes India, the United States, Japan, and Australia. The group works to promote a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific region. The meeting in New Delhi is likely to take place on May 26, according to media reports.
The State Department said Rubio plans to discuss key issues with senior Indian officials. Those discussions will focus on energy partnerships, trade expansion, and defense cooperation. The U.S. Embassy in India earlier said Rubio’s trip would include “Ministerial Quad meetings” along with other high-level engagements. The embassy also described the visit as part of celebrations marking 250 years of America.
“There’s a lot to work on with India,” Rubio said ahead of the visit. “They’re a great ally and partner. We do a lot of good work with them, so this is an important trip.”
The visit comes at a time when Washington and New Delhi continue to strengthen military and economic relations. Both countries have increased cooperation in technology, defense production, and regional security in recent years.
India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is expected to chair the Quad ministerial meeting in New Delhi. Rubio will attend alongside foreign ministers from Japan and Australia. The Quad has emerged as a major diplomatic platform in the Indo-Pacific. Leaders from the four countries regularly discuss maritime security, economic cooperation, and regional stability.
Analysts say the upcoming meeting could address concerns over China’s growing influence in the region. The four nations have repeatedly stressed the importance of freedom of navigation and respect for international law. The meeting also comes as the United States continues efforts to strengthen alliances in Asia. India remains a key partner in Washington’s Indo-Pacific strategy because of its economic influence and strategic location.
Rubio’s India trip takes place less than a month before a possible meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump during the G7 Summit in France next month. Trump is expected to attend the summit, scheduled in Évian-les-Bains in the Haute-Savoie region. Modi is also expected to travel to France after recently completing visits to four European countries and the United Arab Emirates.
If the leaders meet, it would mark the first meeting between Modi and Trump in 16 months. Their last in-person meeting took place during Modi’s visit to the United States in February last year. India is not a member of the G7, but the country has regularly received invitations as a guest nation in recent years. India’s growing economic and geopolitical importance has made it a frequent participant in major global summits.
The upcoming visit by Rubio reflects the broader growth in U.S.-India relations. Trade between the two countries has expanded steadily, while defense cooperation has reached new levels through joint military exercises and technology partnerships.
Energy security also remains a major focus area. India continues to seek reliable energy supplies to support its fast-growing economy, while the United States aims to strengthen energy exports and partnerships in Asia.
