SEATTLE (Diya TV) – Indian American Seattle City Council member Kshama Sawant has proposed legislation aimed at fighting caste discrimination. The bill — which is the first of its kind in the nation — is primarily focused on the 167,000 people from South Asia who live in Washington State, especially those located in the Seattle area and focused around the tech sector. The bill follows a 2020 case where the state of California sued Cisco Systems for discrimination against a Indian American employee who was of a lower Indian caste than his managers.

Indian American Washington State Senator Manka Dhingra is sponsoring a resolution honoring the 74th anniversary of India’s Republic Day, celebrating the day in which India implemented its Constitution, taking the final step toward full independence. In Washington DC, California Congressman Ro Khanna and Detroit Representative Shri Thanedar also celebrated the occasion with Indian Ambassador Taranjit Sandhu. 

Vice President Kamala Harris arrived in Monterey Park, California stopping to pay respect to the victims’ of the deadly mass shooting before placing a bouquet in front of the memorial. Harris told reporters the nation is mourning the loss of the 11 people killed and 9 others injured, while also advocating for stricter gun control laws.
