WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — Former Vice President Kamala Harris is strengthening ties with progressive leaders as speculation grows about a possible 2028 presidential campaign. Her recent outreach to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and other influential Democrats has drawn fresh attention from both supporters and critics. While Harris has not announced a White House bid, her latest meetings and conversations have fueled debate about her political future.
Harris spoke with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani last week, according to reports first published by Axios and later confirmed by Fox News Digital. The conversation came as Mamdani’s influence within progressive politics continues to grow. In addition, Harris has held private meetings with several progressive groups in recent weeks.
The outreach signals an effort to reconnect with key parts of the Democratic Party. During the 2024 presidential race, some progressive activists questioned Harris on several issues. As a result, political observers say her latest conversations could help rebuild relationships ahead of any future campaign.
Harris also met privately with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York during a Black women’s empowerment summit in Chicago. Axios first reported the meeting, and Fox News Digital later confirmed it. Although neither side released details, the meeting added to growing speculation about Harris’ political plans.
At the same time, Harris has reportedly reached out to pro-Palestinian organizations. Some of those groups criticized the Biden administration’s approach to the Israel-Gaza war during the 2024 election cycle. One of the organizations reportedly contacted by Harris participated in the Uncommitted Movement, which gained attention after encouraging Democratic voters to protest the administration’s Middle East policy during the primary season.
Political analysts say these efforts could help Harris reconnect with voters who expressed frustration during the last campaign. Even so, it remains unclear whether the outreach reflects long-term planning or routine political engagement.
Meanwhile, Republicans quickly criticized Harris’ reported contact with Mamdani and other progressive figures. Conservative commentators argued that the meetings show the Democratic Party moving further to the left.
Republican political strategist Nathan Brand criticized the reported outreach in a post on X. He claimed Harris had become increasingly desperate across multiple election cycles and argued that another presidential campaign would face even greater challenges.
Republican National Committee Chair Joe Gruters also criticized Harris during an interview with Fox News Digital. He argued that Democratic leaders have embraced what he described as more radical voices within the party. Gruters said Harris’ outreach reflects a broader shift in Democratic politics. He also urged Republicans to remain united as they prepare for future elections.
Supporters of Harris, however, view the meetings differently. They argue that speaking with a wide range of Democratic leaders reflects a normal effort to build relationships across the party. They also note that candidates often meet with different political groups long before making campaign decisions.
Speculation about Harris’ future increased earlier this year after she visited South Carolina, a key state in the Democratic presidential nomination process. The trip came only days after Harris made comments that suggested she was considering another White House campaign.
Speaking at the National Action Network’s 35th Anniversary Convention in April, Harris responded to a question from the Rev. Al Sharpton about a possible 2028 run. She replied, “I might. I’m thinking about it. I’ll keep you posted.” Her answer prompted supporters in the audience to chant, “Run again.”
Harris became the Democratic presidential nominee in 2024 after then-President Joe Biden ended his reelection campaign. She later lost the general election to President Donald Trump. Since leaving office, she has kept a relatively low public profile while remaining active in Democratic events and political discussions.
For now, Harris has not announced whether she will enter the 2028 presidential race. However, her recent conversations with progressive leaders, elected officials, and advocacy groups continue to attract national attention.
