NEW YORK (Diya TV) — Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, said New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani should be arrested as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu prepares to visit the city for the U.N. General Assembly.
“If someone should be arrested, it’s Mayor Mamdani,” Danon said Thursday. He accused the mayor of incitement and “collaborating with the enemies of the United States,” citing an attempted meeting between a city official and Iran’s U.N. ambassador.
Danon’s remarks followed Mamdani’s previous effort to determine whether the city could enforce an International Criminal Court warrant against Netanyahu.
The ICC issued the warrant in 2024, accusing Netanyahu of war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the war in Gaza. Israel denies the allegations.
Mamdani said in July that a legal review found New York City lacked the authority to enforce the warrant. The United States is not an ICC member, and legal experts said the NYPD could not arrest Netanyahu under the court’s order. Mamdani later urged the federal government to act.
Danon said Netanyahu would proceed with his trip and address the General Assembly despite planned protests. Netanyahu is scheduled to speak Sept. 24.
The General Assembly’s annual high-level debate begins Sept. 22 and concludes Sept. 28. Representatives from nearly 200 countries are expected to attend.
New York police will coordinate security with the Secret Service, FBI, State Department and other agencies. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said officials had identified no specific or credible threats but would increase security around the U.N. and other locations.
Mamdani said his discussions with police focused on standard security preparations and protecting New Yorkers during the gathering.
