NEW YORK (Diya TV) — Former PepsiCo Chair and CEO Indra Nooyi says she could not have reached the top of a global company anywhere outside the United States, including India. She credits the country’s merit-based system for opening doors that shaped her career and helped her become one of the world’s most successful business leaders.
Nooyi shared her views during a conversation with former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Wednesday. She reflected on her journey as an immigrant and explained why she believes the United States offers unique opportunities for talented people. She also spoke about the lessons she shares with her daughters about the value of those opportunities.
Nooyi said she often reminds her daughters how fortunate they are to grow up in the United States. According to her, they sometimes ask why she believes it is the greatest country in the world. She then explains how the country creates opportunities that many people cannot find elsewhere.
She pointed to technology as one example. Nooyi said important inventions may begin in different parts of the world. However, she argued that the United States has consistently turned those ideas into products and services that reach millions of people. She said innovation alone does not change the world. Instead, successful commercialization creates real impact and lasting value.
Nooyi also highlighted the opportunities available to immigrants. She said an immigrant can arrive in the United States with very little and still build a remarkable career. She described her own experience as proof of that belief.
“This is where an immigrant could come in with nothing in her pocket and become the CEO of an iconic American red, white, and blue company,” Nooyi said during the discussion.
She added that she would never have become the chief executive of a global company in any other country, including India. According to Nooyi, the American system rewards talent and hard work. She said many mentors focus on ability instead of gender, ethnicity, or background. As a result, people with strong skills have a better chance of succeeding.
Furthermore, Nooyi encouraged her daughters to appreciate those opportunities. She urged them to protect what she described as the spirit of the United States. She believes future generations should help preserve the values that encourage innovation, opportunity, and individual achievement.
Nooyi’s career reflects that message. She was born in India and later studied at the Yale School of Management in the United States. After joining PepsiCo, she rose through the company’s leadership ranks. Eventually, she became chief executive and led the global food and beverage company for 12 years before stepping down in 2018.
During her tenure, Nooyi gained recognition for expanding PepsiCo’s global business and promoting long-term growth strategies. She also became one of the most influential women in corporate America. Therefore, her leadership story continues to inspire business professionals, students, and entrepreneurs around the world.
