SWIFT CURRENT, Canada (Diya TV) — Two Calgary residents were arrested after law enforcement officers seized eight kilograms of fentanyl during a traffic stop near Swift Current, Saskatchewan, authorities said.
Saskatchewan RCMP’s Roving Traffic Unit (RTU) and the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol (SHP) performed the stop on Highway 1 Tuesday as part of proactive patrols. Underneath the spare tire, police say they found fentanyl hidden inside the vehicle; Swati Narula, 26, of Calgary, along with Kunwardeep Singh, 28, of Calgary, were arrested as a result of the search.
“This is a significant fentanyl seizure,” said Superintendent Grant St. Germaine, Officer in Charge of Saskatchewan RCMP Traffic Services. “Only a few grains of fentanyl can cause a fatal overdose. We have prevented potentially millions of doses of this dangerous drug from reaching our communities.”
The suspects are facing one count of trafficking and one count of possession for trafficking under Canada’s Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. RCMP said that both suspects appeared on Wednesday in Swift Current Provincial Court.
According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, one kilogram of fentanyl is enough to kill 500,000 people. That would put the amount of fentanyl seized at lethal potential for 4 million people.
Investigators said Narula and Singh told officers they were traveling to Regina. RCMP, SHP, and the Saskatchewan Trafficking Response Team collaborated on the case.
“This case highlights the importance of our officers’ vigilance in stopping illicit goods from moving through our province,” St. Germaine said.
The arrests follow several recent drug seizures by the RTU, including a January 9 case in which officers seized 700 kilograms of illicit cannabis near Swift Current. Investigations into all cases remain active.
