Amruta Fadnavis

NEW YORK (Diya TV) — Indian Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis oversees the western state of Maharashtra, also home to India’s finance & entertainment capital Mumbai. And while he is busy implementing policies for a better India, wife Amruta Fadnavis is strutting on the ramp to achieve the same result. Sources confirm Amruta Fadnavis will be the showstopper and will be walking at New York Fashion week.

She is doing so in order to raise awareness about the Indian Hand loom industry. Once nearly non-existent, the industry was revived by the legendary M.K Gandhi who decided to spin his own yarn and weave his own cloth, to remind an embattled nation that being self-sufficient was the only way to being truly free. This symbol of India’s freedom has now grown into the largest cottage industry in India producing over $500M in goods.

The export of handloom products rose 6.9% to $368M in 2015 $264.2M 2010.  Last year the US was a major importer of Indian handloom products, with estimated purchases of $107.95M, followed by the UK and Germany at $29.7M and $25.4M, respectively. Italy, France, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Australia, the Netherlands and the UAE were some other export destinations.

Fadnavis is slated to wear an Indo-western Hand-loom ensemble designed by students from Pune based ‘Chasa Institute of Design and Technology’ at the upcoming New York Fashion Week in Manhattan.

Sons and daughters of farmers, fishermen and porters, the student designers come from humble means. Fadnavis touched by the enthusiasm of the students has agreed to walk the ramp to encourage these young minds and to promote the handloom industry and the education of the ‘Girl Child’.

A banker by trade, Fadnavis mentioned that she feels empowered by the support of her husband Devendra Fadnavis. “With the full support from my immediate family members, I can take up these causes and I am not bogged down by any criticism, especially from Political quarters”, she said.

This is not her first time strutting down the runway, she has walked previously for Hemant Trivedi showcasing folk and tribal art. Now, she is also planning on adopting a village near Nagpur named Sekri to develop and provide necessary facilities.

Founding Director of Chasa Institute Chandrakala Sanap is excited to have such support. “We would be showcasing 15 designs. Since I am myself from a rural background, our institute provides avenues to such young female students whose dreams are not stifled by their backgrounds. We are happy to have on board the CM’s wife who is the brand ambassador for this fashion show,” says Sanap

The show is said to be choreographed by Lubna Adams.
