LONDON (Diya TV) — Indian author Kiran Desai has been shortlisted for the 2025 Booker Prize, nearly two decades after winning the prestigious award. The announcement was made at a public event on Sept. 23 at the Royal Festival Hall in London’s Southbank Centre.
Desai is in contention for her new novel, The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny. The story follows Sonia and Sunny, two Indian immigrants in the United States, who meet unexpectedly on a train in India. The book explores their lives, relationships, and the challenges of migration.
Desai first won the Booker Prize in 2006 for The Inheritance of Loss. Her return to the shortlist highlights her lasting influence on contemporary literature. Indian readers and global audiences alike have long admired her work for its emotional depth and narrative complexity.
Judges praised Desai’s latest novel as “a truly unforgettable epic.” They said it successfully intertwines the love story of Sonia and Sunny with broader questions of class, race, nationhood, and migration. “One of the reasons this book stands out is that it has so much going on,” the panel said. “Many characters, subplots, and places — yet all of it is woven together into one magnificent story.”
The six finalists for the 2025 Booker Prize were unveiled at Fortnum & Mason in London. Alongside Desai, the shortlist includes Susan Choi for Flashlight, Katie Kitamura for Audition, Ben Markovits for The Rest of Our Lives, Andrew Miller for The Land in Winter, and David Szalay for Flesh.
The judging panel features Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀, Chris Power, Kiley Reid, Roddy Doyle, and Sarah Jessica Parker. Each book on the list brings a unique perspective, with themes ranging from personal identity to societal change.
