has emerged as the latest in a long line of superior table tennis players produced by the Indian Community Center’s program in Milpitas, Calif.
The Indian American won the the Mini Cadet boys singles championship at the 2016 China Junior and Cadet Open-ITTF Golden Series Junior circuit, a tournament which took place from July 22 through July 26, in Taicang, China.
Kumar entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed, and showcased his prowess as he cruised through the tournament without losing a single set. He defeated Sirapat Wongthosarat, Wing Hang Shih and Yue Xu in straight sets in the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals, respectively, to claim the title.
Another Indian American player, Aditya Godhwani, participated in the tournament, but the No. 5 seed fell to the aforementioned sixth-seeded Xu.
His win in China is just the latest in a recent string — Kumar, earlier this month, participated in the 2016 U.S. National Championship event in Las Vegas as part of the ICC contingent that captured 19 gold, 14 silver and 18 bronze medals.
Three of the table tennis center’s players — Kanak Jha, Lily Zhang and Jiaqi Zheng — are heading to Brazil for the Olympic Games in August.
