NEW DELHI (Diya TV) — India has signed a memorandum of understanding with Palestinian authorities to build a 200-bed super specialty hospital in Jenin in the occupied West Bank.

The hospital will provide advanced medical care to communities in Jenin and the northern West Bank and will include multiple specialties and a trauma center.

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa and Sripriya Ranganathan, India’s vice minister of external affairs, attended a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday.

The project comes as Palestinian health services face shortages of medicines and medical supplies. More than 11,000 scheduled surgeries in the West Bank have reportedly been postponed this year because of shortages.

Gaza’s health system is under even greater strain. The World Health Organization reported that only 19 of Gaza’s 36 hospitals were partially operational as of June.

During her visit, Ranganathan met Palestinian Health Minister Maged Abu Ramadan and delivered essential medicines. India also plans to organize a prosthetic limb camp and donate a mobile health center for use in Gaza.

The hospital project follows a June appeal from the Palestinian Embassy in New Delhi for greater international support for the Palestinian health system.

India has historically supported the Palestinian cause while also developing closer strategic ties with Israel, particularly in defense, technology and trade.

Since the war in Gaza began in October 2023, New Delhi has continued to provide humanitarian assistance to Palestinians while maintaining relations with Israel.

The Jenin hospital is expected to expand access to specialized treatment in the northern West Bank as Palestinian medical facilities continue to face shortages and growing demand.
