DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (Diya TV) — A high-stakes showdown between India and Pakistan headlines the Asia Cup, starting Tuesday, marking the first cricket clash between the two nations since a military conflict in May. The match is set to be one of the most-watched sporting events in the region, as fans eagerly anticipate the battle between these long-standing rivals.
The Asia Cup, played in the Twenty20 format, also serves as a warm-up for the T20 World Cup scheduled for February-March next year in India and Sri Lanka. The eight-team tournament opens in Abu Dhabi with Afghanistan facing Hong Kong.
India and Pakistan will meet on Sept. 14 in Dubai. Legendary Pakistan bowler Wasim Akram urged players and fans from both countries to “remain disciplined and not cross the line,” emphasizing the importance of sportsmanship amid lingering political tensions.
The two cricketing giants have not played a bilateral series on each other’s soil since 2012. Their meetings are limited to international tournaments on neutral ground under a compromise deal. In this Asia Cup, both teams are in Group A, along with hosts UAE and Oman, meaning they could potentially face each other up to three times before the tournament concludes on Sept. 28.
Tensions have simmered since the intense four-day military conflict in May, the worst between India and Pakistan since 1999. The hostilities left more than 70 people dead after missile, drone, and artillery exchanges before a ceasefire was declared.
The recent conflict has sparked strong reactions in cricket circles. In July and August, a team of retired Indian players withdrew from their semi-final match against Pakistan in the World Championship of Legends in England. Led by former star Yuvraj Singh, the veterans also refused to play Pakistan during the tournament’s group stage, as fans called for a boycott.
Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh, who was part of the veterans team, openly opposed the Asia Cup clash. “Blood and sweat cannot co-exist,” he told The Times of India. “It cannot be the case that there’s fighting on the border, tensions between the two nations, and we go to play cricket. Until these big issues are resolved, cricket is a very small matter.”
India enters the Asia Cup as defending champions. They last faced Pakistan in Dubai during the 50-over Champions Trophy in February, winning by six wickets before lifting the title. Led by Suryakumar Yadav, India holds a 10-3 T20 win record against Pakistan and is considered the strong favorite.
Pakistan, meanwhile, will be without key players Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, both dropped from the T20 squad due to poor form. Despite the absences, Pakistan remains determined to challenge its rivals in Dubai.
The previous Asia Cup, played in a 50-over format in 2023, saw India defeat hosts Sri Lanka in Colombo. The team aims to retain its crown in the T20 version of the tournament.
The Asia Cup features five full members of the Asian Cricket Council: India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, who automatically qualified for the tournament. They are joined by Hong Kong, Oman, and the UAE, which earned their spots through the ACC Men’s Premier Cup.
Group B includes Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, and Sri Lanka. The tournament will progress from the group stage to a Super Four round, culminating in the final in Dubai.
Fans and analysts are closely watching this year’s Asia Cup not only for the on-field action but also for the symbolic significance of cricket in bringing a sense of normalcy after recent tensions.
