SAN FRANCISCO (Diya TV) —   India’s next general election gets started in earnest in seven phases from April 11th through May 19th. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seeking re-election, as are scores of other officials.

In a significant change, for the first time non-resident Indians, including those in the US, can votes by mail or online by going to the Election Commission of India’s website.

Priyanka Gandhi, younger sister to Prime Minister Modi’s opposition in the upcoming election, Rahul Gandhi, made her first ever public speech, taking on the prime minister in his home state, while not mentioning him directly.

Indian Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale continued his visit in Washington, meeting with U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs David Hale. In a statement, both sides called on Pakistan to address cross-border terrorism. And Hale was invited to visit New Delhi to continue talks.

Despite a major protest effort by scores of South Asian women, the Senate voted along party lines, 53-46, to advance judicial nominee Neomi Rao towards a lifetime seat on the DC Circuit Court of Appeals, the second most powerful court in the country. The final confirmation vote is tomorrow.
