HYDERABAD, India (Diya TV) — In a surprise move that sparked debate across political lines, the Telangana government has announced plans to name the road alongside the U.S. Consulate General in Hyderabad “Donald Trump Avenue.” The decision comes as the state prepares for a major global investment event and pushes a broader branding strategy that links Hyderabad’s infrastructure to international figures and tech giants.
State leaders say the naming plan is part of a larger effort to showcase Telangana’s global connections. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy first floated the idea earlier this year while speaking at the U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum in Washington, D.C. He said Hyderabad should honor world-famous corporations and personalities that influence the region’s economy.
The new road names reflect that goal. A major road near Google’s upcoming mega-campus will become Google Street. A popular junction will be renamed Wipro Junction. A new stretch in the city’s tech hub will take the name Microsoft Road. The government also plans to name the proposed greenfield radial road at the Regional Ring Road after industrialist Ratan Tata.
Officials say these changes highlight Hyderabad’s growth as a global tech center. The city is home to thousands of workers who move to the United States each year for jobs, study, and family. The U.S. Consulate in Hyderabad is one of the busiest in South Asia, making the Trump Avenue plan especially symbolic.
The announcement has drawn stiff criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party. BJP leaders called the proposal unnecessary and politically driven. Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar said the state government was choosing names “based on whoever trends.” He added that the Congress-led administration should first consider renaming Hyderabad to Bhagyanagar if it wants to honor historical roots.
Kumar said the ruling party was focused on branding exercises instead of addressing public issues. He pointed to BJP-led protests and accused the state government of ignoring basic needs while spending time on high-profile renaming decisions.
The timing of the announcement aligns with preparations for the Telangana Rising Global Summit, a major showcase for investors. The two-day summit will take place at the new Bharat Future City. The event is expected to attract top corporate executives, overseas delegations, and government officials.
Hyderabad police issued a traffic advisory for December 8 and 9. Heavy congestion is expected around Pedda Golconda and the Outer Ring Road’s Exit 15. VVIP convoys will move through the area, slowing traffic and restricting access. Officials urged commuters to avoid the stretch and plan routes in advance.
Police will place signboards at key points and deploy additional personnel to manage the flow of vehicles. Authorities asked residents to cooperate and follow instructions to prevent major delays during the summit.
India already has several Trump-branded luxury towers in cities such as Mumbai, Pune, and Kolkata, with another project underway in the Delhi region. But Donald Trump Avenue will mark the first time an Indian public road carries a U.S. president’s name.
