SAN FRANCISCO (Diya TV) – England is making history. Rishi Sunak will become the next British Prime Minister and the country’s first leader of Indian descent and the first Hindu to serve in the role. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent well wishes and U.S. President Joe Biden called Sunak’s selection “a groundbreaking milestone.” Sunak’s rise comes amid political turmoil in the U.K. after Prime Minister Liz Truss announced her resignation just after 45 days in office.

President Biden and his wife, Jill, are set to host a reception at the White House to celebrate Diwali. The festival symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and is celebrated by Hindus, Jains and Sikhs across the world, especially in India. Last week Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump hosted their own Diwali celebrations.

Xi Jinping is heading into another five years as China’s powerful leader with a tightening grip on the ruling party and a vow to cement the country’s superpower status at home and abroad. However, he’s facing headwinds and a faltering economy many around the world now sees China as a growing threat.
