JERICHO, N.Y. (Diya TV) — Jericho High School senior Dev Lakhani has taken first place in the journalism competition at the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) National Leadership Conference. The event took place from June 29 to July 2 at the Anaheim Convention Center in California.

Lakhani outperformed competitors from all 50 states in a 100-question exam. The test evaluated students on news writing, media ethics, interviewing skills, and publication management. The conference drew more than 17,000 students, educators, and exhibitors from across the United States.

“Four years ago, I had no idea what FBLA would teach me about storytelling and leadership,” Lakhani said. “This win proves that when you stay committed and learn from the right people, you can accomplish things you never imagined.”

Lakhani’s national win capped a four-year journey with the Jericho High School FBLA chapter. In 2024, he earned seventh place nationally in the Intro to Business Presentation category alongside teammates Dylan Rateshwar and Kaylin Kim. At the state level, he captured five first-place finishes at the New York State Leadership Conference in Business Procedures, Presentation, Public Policy, Website Design, and Journalism. He earned seven state medals in total.

Michael Goldin, Jericho FBLA advisor, praised Lakhani’s achievements. “We are super proud of Dev and all that he has accomplished,” Goldin said. Lakhani credited his success to the guidance of his advisors, Goldin, Nicole Izzo, and Jessica Ruth Rogovitz. He said their leadership helped create a collaborative environment within the chapter. The Jericho FBLA program has built a reputation for producing strong competitors at both state and national levels.

FBLA is a nonprofit organization with more than 200,000 members. The organization prepares students for careers in business, leadership, and entrepreneurship. Its National Leadership Conference is the flagship event for student competitions, judged by business leaders and educators.

The journalism competition challenges students to demonstrate technical skills and ethical understanding. Lakhani’s top score highlights his mastery of these essential areas in news reporting. Lakhani plans to pursue studies in writing, leadership, and business innovation in college. He hopes to combine his passion for storytelling with skills in business and leadership.

The Jericho High School chapter continues to focus on leadership development, community engagement, and preparing students for careers in business. Under the guidance of Goldin, Izzo, and Rogovitz, the chapter has earned multiple state and national honors, regularly sending students to compete at the FBLA National Leadership Conference. Lakhani’s story reflects the impact of dedication, teamwork, and mentorship. His achievements show how high school programs like FBLA can inspire students to reach national recognition.

The National Leadership Conference provides a platform for students to test their skills against the best in the country. It allows young leaders to grow in confidence, learn business principles, and develop communication and leadership skills. Lakhani’s win is a testament to the value of consistent effort and guidance.

“FBLA has taught me how to lead, collaborate, and communicate effectively,” Lakhani said. “I am grateful for the support from my advisors and peers who have made this journey possible.”
