MUMBAI (Diya TV) — Haigreve Khaitan, managing partner of Khaitan & Co., has joined the Global Board of Directors of the U.S.-India Business Council (USIBC), marking another step in stronger business ties between India and the United States. The organization announced his appointment in a post on X. The move comes as both countries continue to expand trade, investment, and business partnerships across several sectors.
USIBC said Khaitan will help advance collaboration on trade, investment, and market access. At the same time, India and the United States continue discussions on a proposed bilateral trade agreement that could create new opportunities for businesses in both countries.
Khaitan welcomed the appointment and said he looks forward to working with business and policy leaders. He also said the proposed trade agreement has the potential to reshape commercial relations and strengthen the trade corridor between India and the United States. In addition, he said he plans to support USIBC’s efforts to deepen economic cooperation between the two nations.
USIBC operates as part of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The organization represents companies from the United States, India, and the Indo-Pacific region. It also serves as a major platform that connects businesses with government leaders. As a result, the council plays an important role in promoting trade, encouraging investment, and supporting policy discussions that improve the business environment.
Khaitan joins a board that includes several leading corporate executives from India. Their presence highlights USIBC’s growing engagement with Indian industry. Recent additions include Amit Chadha, chief executive officer and managing director of L&T Technology Services; K. Balasubramanian, managing director and corporate banking head of Citi India; Sanket Ray, president of Coca-Cola India and Southwest Asia; and Winselow Tucker, president and general manager of Eli Lilly India.
The Global Board also includes several Indian-American business leaders. Among them is former USIBC President Nisha Biswal, who received the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award in 2017 for her work in strengthening India’s engagement with the global Indian community. Together, the board brings experience from business, finance, technology, healthcare, and public policy.
Khaitan brings decades of legal and corporate experience to the role. According to his biography on the Khaitan & Co. website, he has led the firm as managing partner for more than 30 years. During that time, he helped expand the firm into one of India’s largest full-service law firms. He also leads the firm’s corporate, mergers and acquisitions, and private equity practices. In addition, he serves on its National Executive Committee.
His legal practice focuses on mergers and acquisitions, private equity investments, corporate governance, restructuring, and regulatory matters. Over the years, he has advised Indian business groups, multinational companies, and global investment funds on major corporate transactions and strategic business decisions.
Beyond his legal work, Khaitan also serves as an independent director on the boards of several leading Indian companies. According to his biography on the Milken Institute website, those companies include Reliance Industries, Jio Platforms, Tech Mahindra, Dalmia Bharat, and Grasim Industries. Furthermore, he serves as a member of the Competition Commission of India’s committee for the Digital Competition Act. In that role, he contributes to discussions on India’s evolving digital regulatory framework.
His appointment comes at a time when economic cooperation between India and the United States continues to grow. Trade between the two countries has expanded in recent years, while companies have increased investments across technology, manufacturing, healthcare, financial services, and digital infrastructure. At the same time, policymakers continue to explore ways to improve market access and reduce trade barriers.
