AYODHYA, India (Diya TV) — An investigation into alleged financial irregularities at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya has sparked political debate and raised questions about the management of one of India’s most important Hindu religious sites. The probe comes at a sensitive time for the Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP, as it prepares for a key election in Uttar Pradesh later this year.

Authorities have started examining claims that cash, gold, and silver jewelry donated by devotees went missing from the temple trust. Police have arrested eight officials linked to the trust, according to a person familiar with the investigation who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the inquiry remains active. In addition, two office bearers of the Ram Temple resigned after the allegations surfaced.

The temple trust has not publicly responded to requests for comment.

Officials are investigating claims that donations collected from worshippers did not reach official records. Devotees in India often donate money, gold, and silver as part of religious traditions. Some offerings may not receive individual records before workers place them in temple collection boxes. Investigators now want to determine whether anyone misused those donations.

According to the source, the temple receives monthly cash donations ranging from 40 million rupees to 100 million rupees, or about $1.1 million. Because of the large volume of donations, the allegations have attracted national attention. Moreover, many devotees have expressed concern about the reported losses.

The Ram Temple holds deep religious and political importance in India. It stands at a disputed site in Ayodhya that many Hindus believe marks the birthplace of Lord Ram. In 2019, India’s Supreme Court cleared the way for the construction of the temple after a decades-long legal dispute. As a result, the project fulfilled one of the BJP’s longest-standing political and ideological goals.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the temple’s consecration ceremony in January 2024. Millions of people watched the event live across India. Furthermore, the ceremony strengthened the BJP’s outreach to Hindu voters before the country’s general election.

Now, however, the financial investigation threatens to overshadow that achievement. The inquiry also comes as the BJP prepares for an important state election in Uttar Pradesh. The state remains India’s most populous and carries major political influence. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, a senior BJP leader and Hindu monk, currently leads the state government.

Political observers say the case could create challenges for both the BJP and its ideological parent, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, or RSS. Journalist and Modi biographer Nilanjan Mukhopadhyay described the controversy as one of the biggest political embarrassments for the organizations. He also said the situation appears to show differences between the Uttar Pradesh government and the BJP’s central leadership.

Even so, BJP leaders insist the alleged misconduct involved only a few individuals rather than the institution itself. Party spokesperson Gopal Krishna Agarwal said authorities should take strict action against anyone found guilty. He added that accountability remains the only appropriate response.

Meanwhile, the opposition Indian National Congress has intensified its criticism. Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said the case tests the BJP’s claims of transparency and good governance. He also called for a retired Supreme Court judge to supervise the investigation instead of local investigators. According to Khera, an independent review would strengthen public confidence in the findings.

The investigation has also affected many ordinary worshippers. Several devotees expressed disappointment after learning about the allegations. Vivek Dwivedi, who has visited the temple twice since its construction, said the reports were unexpected and deeply hurtful.

For many Hindus, the Ram Temple represents faith, history, and cultural identity. Therefore, any controversy surrounding its administration draws intense public attention. At the same time, many people hope investigators will establish the facts quickly and ensure that donated funds remain protected.
