NEW YORK (Diya TV) — A man armed with an AR-15-style rifle opened fire inside a Midtown Manhattan office tower Monday evening, killing four people, including a New York City police officer, and wounding another, officials said. The shooter then killed himself.

The attack shocked the heart of Manhattan, just blocks from landmarks like Rockefeller Center and St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The building at 345 Park Avenue houses offices for the NFL, investment giant Blackstone, and other major firms.

Officer Didarul Islam, 36, was identified as one of the victims. He had served with the New York Police Department for three and a half years and was working as an off-duty security detail at the time of the shooting.

“He was saving lives. He was protecting New Yorkers,” Mayor Eric Adams said at a press briefing. “He died a hero.”

Officer Islam was a Bangladeshi immigrant, a father of two with a third child on the way. He lived in the Bronx and was known as a devoted family man and a mentor within New York’s Bangladeshi community.

The shooter, identified as Shane Devon Tamura, 27, of Las Vegas, entered the building shortly after 6:28 p.m. He arrived in a BMW registered in his name and was carrying an M4-style rifle.

Surveillance footage showed Tamura marching across a public plaza before bursting into the building’s lobby. He first shot Officer Islam, then opened fire on two civilians and a security guard. One woman was spared as she exited an elevator.

Tamura then rode the elevator to the 33rd floor, where he fatally shot one more person before turning the gun on himself.

Three other victims died at the scene. Authorities have not yet released their names. A fifth victim, an NFL employee, remains hospitalized in critical condition. Four others suffered minor injuries while fleeing the building.

Police said the building had a large number of people inside at the time, as the attack happened during rush hour. Many office workers were trapped for nearly two hours while police cleared the tower.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Tamura had a documented mental health history. Officers found medication, a revolver, and ammunition in his vehicle parked outside the building. No explosives were discovered.

Investigators tracked Tamura’s movements from Las Vegas through Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, and finally New Jersey. He crossed into New York City on Monday afternoon before carrying out the attack.

There is no known link between Tamura and the building or its tenants. Authorities are still investigating the motive.

Officer Islam’s death sent waves of grief through his Bronx neighborhood and across New York’s Muslim community. Mourners gathered at his home and local mosque into the early morning hours. Community leaders praised his dedication to both his job and his roots.

“He came as an immigrant and made a life here,” said Marjanul Karim, a close family friend. “He wanted to leave behind a legacy his children could be proud of. And he did.”

The NYPD performed a dignified transfer of Officer Islam’s body early Tuesday morning at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan.

Monday’s mass shooting comes amid a period of relative calm in New York City, which is on pace for its fewest homicides and shootings in decades. But high-profile attacks in corporate areas have left many workers and companies uneasy.

In December, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare was shot and killed outside a Midtown hotel. That suspect remains in custody, awaiting trial.

Commissioner Tisch said two NYPD officers were working in the Park Avenue building as part of a program allowing companies to hire police for added security. As investigators continue to search for answers, city officials emphasized the bravery of those who responded.

“Officer Islam died doing what he loved—protecting people,” Tisch said. “He lived and died as a hero.”
