FREMONT, Calif. (Diya TV) — Fremont Police have arrested 28-year-old Miguel Angel Villareal for the stabbing of two Indian students near Fremont Hub. Villareal is now in custody at the Santa Rita Jail without bail, facing charges of first-degree attempted murder.

The violent attack targeted three friends, Syed Shadan ul Haq, Khalid Bin Masood Yafai, and Mohammad Abdul Basur Sufiyan, all pursuing engineering studies in the U.S. from Hyderabad, India. The assailant, Villareal, with a history of arrests, attacked Haq and Yafai while they waited for Sufiyan, who was inside a nearby store purchasing soft drinks.

Swift police response, aided by surveillance footage and witness interviews, led to Villareal’s arrest without incident. The victims were rushed to San Jose Regional Medical Center Hospital’s Trauma Unit, with Yafai undergoing multiple surgeries and still hospitalized.

Villareal has a criminal history, including robbery and drug-related offenses. The Fremont Police Crimes Against Person(s) Unit is leading the investigation, with Villareal awaiting arraignment on two counts of attempted murder.

The incident has raised concerns about public safety, as Villareal, on probation for serious crimes, carried out the attack seemingly without a known motive. The victims, particularly Yafai, face a challenging recovery both physically and mentally.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the community demands accountability and seeks answers about the assailant’s release despite his criminal history. The case is emblematic of the broader issues surrounding the criminal justice system and public safety.

Fremont Police have urged anyone with additional information to come forward and contact Detective M. Paiva at 790-6900 or [email protected].
