REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. (Diya TV) — Former President Joe Biden recently underwent Mohs surgery to remove skin cancer lesions, his spokesperson confirmed Thursday. The procedure marks the latest health challenge for Biden, who has faced several cancer diagnoses in recent years.
Spokesperson Kelly Scully said Biden received Mohs surgery, a treatment that removes thin layers of skin until doctors find no trace of cancer cells. The method is considered one of the most effective ways to treat common types of skin cancer, including basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.
Inside Edition first reported Biden’s condition after a video showed him leaving church in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, with a visible scar on his forehead. The footage quickly drew public attention and raised questions about his health.
This is not the first time Biden has undergone skin cancer surgery. In February 2023, while serving as president, his doctors removed a basal cell carcinoma from his chest during a routine physical. At the time, White House physician Dr. Kevin O’Connor confirmed that surgeons had removed all of the cancerous tissue and that no additional treatment was needed.
Biden has continued to receive regular skin checks since then. Doctors say these routine exams are important for detecting new growths early, especially for older patients and those with a history of sun exposure.
Biden’s latest surgery comes months after his office announced a more serious health battle. In March, he revealed that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that had already spread to his bones.
“Cancer touches us all,” Biden wrote on social media at the time. “Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places.”
His office later confirmed that the 82-year-old had begun treatment and was under close medical supervision. The diagnosis in May 2025 marked a turning point for Biden, who had previously dealt only with localized forms of cancer.
First Lady Jill Biden has also faced skin cancer treatment. In early 2023, doctors performed Mohs surgery to remove a lesion above her right eye. The procedure was successful, and her medical team reported no further concerns.
The Bidens have long been open about their family’s struggles with cancer. Their son Beau Biden died of brain cancer in 2015, a loss that has shaped much of the family’s advocacy work on health care and cancer research.
Mohs surgery is a widely used treatment for skin cancers that are visible on the face and other sensitive areas. Doctors remove the cancer in thin layers and examine each layer under a microscope. This process continues until no cancer cells remain.
The technique helps preserve as much healthy skin as possible while ensuring the cancer does not return. According to the American Cancer Society, Mohs surgery offers the highest cure rates for common skin cancers and is especially useful for patients with a history of recurring lesions.
The Bidens’ repeated health challenges highlight the growing issue of cancer treatment in America. Skin cancer remains the most common form of cancer in the United States, with millions of new cases diagnosed each year. Prostate cancer is also among the most frequently diagnosed cancers in men, especially those over 65.
For Biden, the surgeries and diagnoses have been both a personal battle and a public matter. As a former president, his health receives scrutiny. Still, he has continued to speak openly about his experiences and has encouraged others to undergo regular screenings.
Biden’s latest surgery is expected to be successful, though his broader health challenges remain. He continues to receive treatment for prostate cancer and undergo regular dermatologic checks.
