NEW YORK (Diya TV) — The family of a New Jersey man paralyzed after being shot in a road rage incident recently filed a lawsuit against New York City and the officer involved. Patel, 30, was shot on May 17 in Voorhees Township, NJ, by off-duty NYPD officer Hieu Tran, who allegedly used his service weapon during the altercation. It alleges the NYPD was negligent in failing to recognize and act on documentation detailing Tran’s mental health issues and alcoholism, which allowed him to keep carrying a weapon.
Patel’s family filed damages over medical bills and lifelong care, with evidence the shooting had left him quadriplegic and severely brain-injured. The lawsuit also included NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban and Mayor Eric Adams for gross negligence in addressing Tran’s issues.
The shooting has made headlines because it ended in tragic circumstances, apart from the already serious accusations against the NYPD. After the shooting, Tran left the scene and went about his daily activities, which eventually led him to jail and being formally charged with an attempt to murder.
